Florida Student News Watch Secures 2026-27 Solutions Journalism Grant

Tallahassee, FL – Sept. 11, 2026 —The Florida Student News Watch was selected as a member of the Solutions Journalism Network's 2026-27 Student Media Challenge. As one of eight student newsrooms across the country, the News Watch will receive grant funding and solutions journalism training from the global organization.

“We’re thrilled to be part of this talented cohort supporting solutions journalism opportunities for students,” News Watch managing editor Tarryn Nichols said. “It’s an exciting enrichment of what we offer emerging environmental journalists — and our experienced mentors.”

With the grant funding, the News Watch will produce eight solutions-focused stories on multifaceted environmental challenges facing Florida communities. The grant will allow the program to fund reporting trips for the first time, unlocking a new level of mentored journalism experience for students.

Students and mentors will also attend Solutions Journalism Network training with the cohort.
